Summary and Characters Summary: What my mother doesnt know is a book about how much one girls life changes over winter break. in the story all of Sophies friends go out of town so she is forced to plan an in town vaction of her own. she starts her vacation with going to the museum where she sees the school outcast, Robin Murphy. They start to talk and Sophie finds that Murphy is actually funny and she begins to fall for him. Over winter break she and Murphy spend everyday together, including Christmas and new year. then its time to go back to school... She hasnt told her friends who her winter break sweat heart was and she is affraid how they'll take it. When she walks into the lunch room on that first day back at school, she see's two tables, one with her best friends sitting at it, and the other murphy. the book ends leaving you wondering, which table will she choose??? Sophie: The pretty and popular, Sophie is every guys dream. She is very artistic and smart and loves to have a good time. But when she is faced with a tough decision, will she make the right one?
Murphy: Murphy is an outcast at school. He has no friends and they even made his name an insult. if you mess up or trip they call it Pullin a "Murphy". or if your doing somthing thats considered lame they would call it being a "Murphy". When he manages to land the most popular girl in school, no one is happy about it.
Rachel and Grace: Rachel and Grace are and have been Sophie's best friends since third grade. They do everything together and Sophie couldn't imagine life without them. That is, until she starts getting to know Murphy and she cant imagine what life will be like when they come back... all she knows is they probably wont be very happy.
